Modular Flip-Dot Kinetic Wall panels creating large-scale mechanical pixel display

Peng Gengjian & Pro Lab | Shanghai New Youth Multimedia Art Exhibition | May 18–June 18, 2024

“Jungle” is a 3.2 m × 1.2m mechanical interactive installation composed of 9,216 bi-stable flip-dots. Every visitor who stands in front of the wall instantly becomes part of a living pixel jungle — their silhouette is captured in real time and transformed into a flowing mechanical portrait made of thousands of flipping dots.

The classic black-and-white flip-dots combine with a depth camera system to create a poetic collision between retro mechanics and contemporary interaction. The silent flipping of each dot forms an ever-changing pixel jungle that reacts to human movement, breath, and gesture.
